Home Repair: A Revelation of a Social Crisis

On September 6th 2017, Sint Maarten was struck by Hurricane Irma, a category 5+ storm with sustained winds of 185 mph. This short film aims to complement the report entitled “Home Repair: A revelation of a social crisis” by the Ombudsman Sint Maarten. This report aims to provide an overview of the developments to date in terms of home repair. The report will focus on how the most vulnerable persons in our society have been impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. How have the hurricanes impacted their standard of living? How have these persons experienced the assistance surrounding home/roof repair? What have been their challenges? It will take a critical look at the recovery process and identify the bottlenecks citizens are facing when seeking assistance, especially from government, in particular concerning home / roof repair. Additionally, the chronic lack of affordable housing will be addressed.
